'90s artists seem right at home in Gershwin tribute

Red Hot + Rhapsody

Natalie Merchant seems right at home. So does Sinead O'Connor. And of course David Bowie proves that virtually no musical genre is beyond his reach. All of this musical magic happens on Red Hot + Rhapsody, the newest release in the 10-year-old Red Hot project which benefits AIDS prevention and reliefaround the globe.

Red Hot founder and executive producer John Carlin began his venture in the early 1990s with debut compilaAngelo Badalamenti tion Red Hot + and David Bowie Blue, a tribute to Cole Porter. Carlin has moved through many musical forms including pop, country, and Latin. Red Hot + Rhapsody, Carlin's tribute to George and Ira Gershwin offers more than 70 minutes of music.

Natalie Merchant seemed an obvious choice for this project and her smooth vocals are perfect in "But Not For Me." Later in the album, Sinead O'Connor lends worthy sophistication to "Someone to Watch Over Me." Duncan Sheik's "Embraceable You" is sweet, while Luscious Jackson elegantly

moves through "I've Got a Crush on You."

Finally, David Bowie and Angelo Badalamenti close the album gracefully with a beautiful rendition of "A Foggy Day (in London Town)," a beautiful song wrapped in flowing string orchestration.

The largest and most successful AIDS effort in the entertainment industry, Red Hot projects have raised nearly $7 million for more than 100 AIDS organizations.

Show tells the real story of Ellen's 'Puppy' episode

"It's a pretty risky thing to say 'I'm gay' and not be scared to death," Ellen DeGeneres says in a moment, like many others in this interview, that reveals just how stressful the time before, during and after the making of her historic coming-out episode must have been for the lesbian sitcom star.

The candid interview is part of The Real Ellen Story, a one-hour documentary about the now-legendary "Puppy" episode. The

Ellen DeGeneres

show airs on Bravo Profiles Wednesday, September 30 at 8 pm.

When DeGeneres decided to come out on national television, her writers, producers, fellow actors and family quickly embraced her decision. But she soon learned that it would take much more than moral support to get through what would become an epic struggle to air the episode.

"When we first set out to make this film, we thought there was nothing left to be said about Ellen," said co-directors Fenton Baily and Randy Barbato. “Little did we know that the real story of what happened had not been told."

Through in-depth interviews with DeGeneres, her mother Betty DeGeneres, partner Anne Heune; Laura Dem, Diane Saw-

yer, Melissa Etheridge, the entire production team and former Disney executives, The Real Ellen Story provides a compelling time-line of events leading up to the historic moment (an enthusiastic audience of 42 million tunedin to watch). Their stories describe the rumors, accusations, boycotts, bomb threats, politics, publicity (and sadly, the lack thereof) and the heartbreak of the eventual cancellation.

One highlight of the film is the intimate view it gives into the personal relationship between DeGeneres and actress Anne Heche. Looking like any other lesbian couple that has ever fallen in love on the first date, and rented a U-Haul on the second (except for the more opulent digs), the two women are clearly in love with each other and committed to their partnership.

The two exchanged rings shortly after they met, and have recently lent their names to the battle to defeat an anti-gay ballot measure in Hawaii that seeks to amend the state constitution to limit marriage to the union of one man and one woman. On September 28, they will appear together at a San Francisco fundraiser co-sponsored by Protect Our Constitution/Human Rights Campaign and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. In one scene, DeGeneres strikes an “Aw, shucks, your embarrassing me, honey" pose as Heche, sitting on her lap, recounts the conversation they had last year with President Clinton, when the commander-in-chief told the sitcom star, "I think you're very brave."

"Even though they may not have wanted it to happen, she did get to change the world," Heche says proudly of her lover.

Bravo Profiles airs every weeknight at 8 pm exclusively on Bravo. Future episodes of interest to the GLBT community will include segments on David Bowie, Leonardo DiCaprio, k.d. lang, the making of Rent, opera diva Maria Callas, and gay author Oscar Wilde.
